In order to effect change, it seems we need 5 crucial steps: Be willing to See and acknowledge the issue we need to change; Decide you are in fact going to Do something about it; Connect with others to gain support, new ideas and collective clout; Find ways toSustain your own energies to ensure you don't burn out; and use your experience and energy to Inspire others to take action so we make the change become exponential. On that basis:
1 What issue do you see or come across that awakens the creative disruptor in you, and why does it matter to you the way it does?
The way that modern living standards are so poor and that the majority struggle to earn a living and have a secure home and all of the stress and mental health issues that creates - and in turn the lack of energy people have to give to help to create healthy, nurturing human relationships.
2 What action are you actually taking to tackle this, and how do you feel about what you do?
I work with children and young people who are struggling, they have complex social and emotional needs and accompanying destructive behaviours which are their automatic coping devices.
3 How important do you think it is to reach out to and work with others as you work for this change, and how do you do it?
It is critical we help these children and young people as they do not have anyone else to help them and they are on a downward trajectory. I build trusting relationships with them and I am consistently there with empathy but also solutions focussed guidance.
4 How do you keep that fire in your belly alight without it causing you to burn out? How do you sustain your energies and look after you, and crucially, what's your advice to others?
The fire in my belly is always there because the cases are numerous because the system is overloaded and can not cope with the sheer number of child and adolescent mental health referrals. I sustain myself by practicing everything I preach and by practicing self care - you cannot pour from an empty cup.
5 Positive change is contagious. Sometimes all that's needed for someone to take action is to see someone else doing something about it. So ... how do you use your experience to inspire others?
I use my experience to help others by talking about it and the human condition - I often I end up helping adults too as they learn about my work with children and young people, they come to me with their issues. It is a self propelling intervention. The more of us who are strong and resilient, who take this on, the more likely we can help create strong, resilient communities which are people and not profit led and break the cycle of inter generational mental health trauma.
And finally ... if someone came up to you in a pub or a cafe and said they were fed up/enfuriated/anxious about something they felt was wrong or needed to change...what would you say?
If someone came up to me in a pub and said they were anxious about something they wanted to change I would say ‘I’m listening’.
