endurance
So the thing is if we want to make change, we need to stay healthy. Or we're going to achieve nothing.
This is what we are jackdawing together to help us sustain ourselves. All treasure trove findings welcome.
And in case we sometimes (perish that thought) forget to reflect ... below are some of the comments from the recent survey we ran to ask people, amongst other things, if they were finding the support they needed to deliver the changes they thought were required.
It makes thought-provoking reading. These are the people on the front line of the changes we collectively pretty much agree we need. So we probably need to find a better way of supporting that front line ...
"I often feel isolated because I don't think my friends always get it. I tend not to talk about my pain at the state of the world."
"Everyone should think about [making sure we get the support we need]! "
"..find it difficult actually... all i do is voluntary so have a passion for it but i find it quite draining sometimes. media makes it worse i think not better. the scale of problems you witness now that social media is so immediate means sometimes with others makes you feel supported but also overwhelmed. "
"I have recently hit a burn out and I have been exhausted and incredibly tearful. A visit to the doctor helped to understand that I had hit my emotional ceiling - I was stressed and exhausted. This was quite interesting for me because I did not know that this was happening"
"It's bloody difficult to stay motivated in the face of such daily horrors and media f*ckery. And sometimes it's too difficult to read yet another devastating article; it's important to know how much sadness your mind can handle. I try to stop reading the bad stuff for a few moments when I start to feel an overwhelming sense of helplessness (this happens fairly often)"
"I find that few, if any, of my friends actually understand this. Could of course be a good thing as it means that it is not a constant topic of conversation!! I do often feel pretty desperate about things though and that can be isolating and depressing."
"Burning out faster than a stick of dynamite..."
Hmmmmmmm ...
As one Cafe Disruptif member says:
"HOW can we ALL be positive deviants for our own campaign and agenda AND still help every other positive deviants and support their campaigns WITHOUT becoming a burnt out activist overwhelmed by the work/story/action??" :)
This is exactly what we're going to do something about - collectively. Click on the offerings below to find ways of sustaining ourselves. Sustaining *ourselves* sorta has to be our starting point. Otherwise how the hell are we going to change the world? :)
helpful thing to do
If you have ever wondered about why you may see the world differently from others, it could be because you do.
This is a well researched test to try and ascertain what broad (and I say broad deliberately) sort of personality traits you have,
and have developed.
It sort of ... clarifies things. And if we're hoping to get really good at talking to people about change, it's very useful to glean as much as we can about how we're coming across ... as opposed to how we my THINK we're coming across.
I've done it. It was pretty spookily accurate, and made me think about how I behave, why I do what I do,
accept some things and determine to look at others. Have a look. You may be equally (pleasantly) spooked:
