climate disrupted:
in good company

a room of good company

Wow. Once again, minds and hearts from the worlds of farming, of community development, of climate science, of psychotherapy, of politics, of energy, of retail, of hospitality, of habitat, of woodlands and soil, of health, of strategic development came together and offered up how hard it is to really digest where we are right now in terms of the changing climate - you can see more of some of the information on the current state of affairs on our Climate : Disrupted page, here.

We talked about change, about facts, and behaviour; about politics and community and fear , about loss and the past, about the future, and ritual and sustenance and communications and systems and planning; and watched and heard and spoke and listened and  ate together in the airy and safe and beautiful space of Treverbyn Hall in Stenalees.

We shared many thoughts and fears, some tears and sharp intakes of breath; and having come in the door to meet so many strangers, discovered we have enormous amounts in common with a happy blizzard of links to each other:

2 SYSTEMS-CHANGE

This group considered what an alternative plan to the current paradigm might look like, and how important that could be in terms of making the alternative actually visible to those who feel we don't have one; and give those of us who do a sense of direction. The Good Companions are now developing a ten point strategy for Cornwall - watch this space, add your comments, join in on FB - whatever your thing is!:

3 COMMUNICATING

This is a huge, interesting and critical issue. It involved figuring out who you would like to communicate *with*; about *what*; deciding *how*; deciding *when*; understanding *why* - and sometimes all of those things can be changing under your feet - all at once.

The good news is there is a huge amount of information out there. There's already loads on our own website here, on the psychology of change - have a look at our Now It's Personal Page, at our Why it's So Difficult Page and our launch event.

I would also hugely recommend George Marshall's book: Why our brains are wired to ignore climate change.

And to kick off ...

Kevin and Sara have written this as a kick starter: add your thoughts and comments below or on the FB page  and we'll also be communicating by email.

And an interesting piece from Fi ...

and bearing in mind our overall Cafe Disruptif objectives:

1 form a simple alternative creatively disruptive think and do force for Cornwall that can begin to grapple with the new, exciting ideas around thriving, justice and restorative models for our present and future and figure out how to leave any dessicated, over-chewed ones behind

2 identify more people and networks we can engage with

3 look at the three areas of development:
- opportunities to learn more;
- opportunities to gather and curate inspiration from the vast array of alternative models and initiaves *already* in action; and
- opportunities to find expected and unexpected routes and means to connect, communicate and make these ideas contagious

Looks like we may be fabulously on track....

.

And have a look at this - all abut climate, communication, and change. :)

We looked at three specific issues in more detail:
1 SUSTENANCE
2 SYSTEMS-CHANGE
3 COMMUNICATION

and here are some of the thoughts that have begun to emerge, slowly, but with guts:

1 SUSTENANCE:
We considered the importance of company, of food, of grief, of ritual, of taking care of ourselves psychologically, emotionally, intellectually, socially and physically, in order to do the very best we can. The word "company"comes from Latin and Middle English - com (with) and pane (bread). Company is about sharing food - and that could be real food, and every other sort of sustenance. We agreed that this underpins everything we are able to do in the face of this threat, and felt we are in effect, In Good Company - with Good Companions - as we face this uncertain route ahead. We have ideas - add yours below, or on the FB page:
